CSU Chico Capstone Mobile Robot Topper Project

CSU Chico Capstone Mobile Robot Topper project with Valin

Valin and Omron sponsored a Senior Capstone project at CSU Chico recently. The project was two terms long.  During the first term the students worked on understanding the requirements and designing the solution.  The second term they set out to build what they designed.  The five students, Dean Mellor, Jose Mendoza, Jose Hernandez, Joseph Mount, and Saif Alketbi are a mixture of Mechanical and Mechatronics majors who graduated December 2022.  They were assisted by Valin's Applications Engineers: Ray Marquiss for the mobile robot and controls, Kent Martins for the overall design, Bruce Ng for the conveyor, and Corey Foster for the overall Project Management. The requirement for the group was to make a topper for the mobile robot that Valin can use as a demo and proof-of-concept  tool  for  customers  who  are  interested  in  the  mobile  robot  concept. We settled on a simple conveyor with adjustable height. It also includes sensors and a PLC to allow for load detection and control.  We are looking at following it up with a similar project tailored specifically towards the needs of a prospective customer for the mobile robot, but who wants to load and unload products with something like an articulated robot arm.

Great job team!
